Overview

The ED8106N0xQI is a true digital single-phase PWM controller that is optimally configured for use with Altera’s ET4040QI 40 A power train. The ED8106N0xQI operates as a synchronous step-down converter in a single-rail and single-phase configuration. When used with the ET4040QI it is an ideal solution for FPGA core power applications. The ED8106N0xQI integrates a digital control loop, optimized for maximum flexibility and stability, as well as load step and steady state performance. A robust set of protection and monitoring features is provided as well. In addition to a user-configurable option, several pre-configured options exist that can be selected by setting the values of two external resistors. The ED81xx Power Designer is a PC-based, user-friendly, interface to the ED8106N0xQI that can be used to expedite the design of the digital compensator. During “engineering mode”, the user can use the ED81xx Power Designer GUI to evaluate multiple configuration parameter options. After the user has determined the final configuration option, a configuration file can be created that is then written to the blank un-configured ED8106N0xQI. The ED8106N0xQI + ET4040QI is an ideal solution for high-power applications that require excellent performance as well as design flexibility. This solution has been validated to meet the power requirements for Altera FPGA core power supplies.
